Homespun Homeschool Week #10

Week 10 of Homeschool: We studied ancient China, wrote out Robert Frost poetry, skip counted the 15’s, went GeoCaching (with no luck yet, after 3 tries), read the first 5 chapters of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, brainstormed and wrote a key word outline based on our research of Ellis Island and wrote 3 paragraphs, learned more prepositions, wrote an original poem called “A Year In California (Field wrote – I love the first few lines!), designed our names with the Scratch coding program, learned about Lao-Tzu, Confucius and Taoism, looked at the parts of a plant, carved Jack-O-Lanterns and decorated pumpkin cookies with our cousins, studied Spanish, worked on Latin 4th Declension Noun Endings, and went with Granny & Grampy to see Treasure Island at the B Street Theatre!

Homespun Homeschool Week #9

Week 9 of Homeschool: We wrote a story about Thin Man (a character from Field’s original graphic novel series), made neck ties out of Duct Tape, learned about the 4 hemispheres of Earth, skip counted 14’s, wrote Madjectives, learned more prepositions, gathered specimens of monocots and dicots to compare and contrast, learned about the first cities of India, studied Latin 3rd Declension Noun endings, worked on our drawing, painting and collage skills, and built Snap Circuits!

Homespun Homeschool Week #8: We skip counted 13s, put on a puppet show, learned some ways animals reproduce, read in A Bear Called Paddington, learned about Hinduism and Buddhism in India, studied the Assyrians and read about Gilgamesh and the Lion, learned new prepositions, worked on musical dynamics with our tin whistles, learned Latin 3rd Declension noun endings, wrote Limericks, located the ancient Roman Empire on our maps, practiced Dazzling Division with plates and crackers, worked on Javascript, wrote about the African American poet Phillis Wheatley, made a paper spider to overcome our fear of spiders, and went to Fairy Tale Town!



Homespun Homeschool Week #7

Week 7 of Homeschool: We practiced our handwriting, painted abstract art, made Winnie The Pooh’s Honey Eggnog, wrote haiku’s, sonnets and limericks, reviewed Latin, learned about Hammurabi and the Babylonians, made a volcano and watched it erupt, wrote “The Story of The Beams” and presented it to our Classical Conversations Community, learned how an egg hatches into a chick, built a buzzing circuit game, watched our bean plant sprout beans, used string and paper to watch capillary action in action, built a Rube Goldberg chain reaction and painted pumpkins!






Homespun Homeschool Week #6

Week 6 of Homeschool: We moved to level 2 of our stack-and-build math flip books, colored a Biblical graphic novel of the life of Joseph, worked on handwriting, studied vertebrates and made “snakes” by rubbing crayons on bike tires, started reading All Creatures Great And Small, read Matthew 6:25-34 and crafted scenes depicting the passage, skip counted 11’s and 12’s, learned about ancient Sumeria and Mesopotamia, worked on reading, wrote an original graphic novel in our Hardy Boys journal, learned new prepositions, and went to Bishops Pumpkin Farm!

Homespun Homeschool Week #5

Week 5 of Homeschool: We skip-counted our 9’s and 10’s, went to the Crocker Art Museum and had a private tour with Grampy (retired Crocker Docent!), made a paper-clip version of our family, studied the lines of the globe, built a rainbow colored dinosaur, learned about Ancient Egypt and built the pyramids of Giza, learned the types of invertebrates, studied Spanish, worked on coding, learned new prepositions, watched our bean plants grow flowers, worked on our handwriting, and made pumpkin pie spice sugar cookies!

Week 4 of Homeschool: We memorized the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, learned the parts of a plant cell, saw the newest 2 baby doves in our entryway, worked on handwriting, read about the riot at Ephesus in Acts 19, watched our bean plants grow, learned our First Declension Latin noun endings, created abstract art, made up a story about our own Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World, learned more Prepositions, looked at Art made from pollution, studied globe lines, worked on our skip-counting, performed an experiment to see the effects of pollution in streams, wrote comics, and went to Fairytale Town!

Week 3 of Homeschool: We learned Latin first Declensions, read Dog Man “Lord of the Fleas, studied the Hebrew Empire, learned about the ancient Egyptians’ invention of Papyrus paper and created our own scrolls with hieroglyphics, started reading My Side of the Mountain, practiced skip-counting 5’s and 6’s, read in Tucker’s Countryside, learned about Greek and Roman gods, read Dog Man and Cat Kid, did a Bible Study on how our words can cause harm, studied the parts of an animal cell, performed an experiment to see how animals camouflage themselves, drew pictures of the Genesis account of creation, made a paper apple, listened to the opera Aida, learned new Spanish words, read our longest sentence yet! (Francis), read Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies From Outer Space, performed an experiment to see how desert animals go underground for cooler temperatures, created artwork by drawing upside-down, practiced drawing Dog Man (yes, we like Dog Man a LOT), and went to the zoo!

Week 2 of Homeschool: We practiced addition with stack and build flip books, learned about the Five Kingdoms of Living Things, finished our Ten Commandments train with commands 6-10, made artwork using mirror image and lines of symmetry, learned about Personification, watched our bean plants grow higher and higher, performed a gravity-defying magnetic experiment, studied Prepositions, learned about the Egyptian and Assyrian Empires, skip-counted 3’s and 4’s, learned why a fish floats belly-up, went fishing for sight words, read in Tucker’s Countryside, found the North and South poles using a spinning magnet, read Emily Dickinson poems, learned how spiders use vibration to detect predators or dinner, and mixed colored light to build rainbow optics!

Homespun Homeschool Week #1

Week 1 of Homeschool: We made kites and learned about lift, went to our first Classical Conversations class of the year, practiced letters, numbers and handwriting, sprouted beans and learns the parts of a baby bean, opened our Schule-Tutes, wrote sentences and made stories, made our own cave paintings, learned all about the Classifications of Living Things, made a bullet launcher, learned Latin Noun Cases, read Tucker’s Countryside, programmed code with Python, learned how to brainstorm and use Four-Squares as writing techniques, memorized the first 5 of the 10 Commandments, made a feather out of Duct Tape, read Emily Dickinson poems, learned about online safety for coding, drew Dog Man comics, learned the components of a healthy breakfast, studied the geography of the Fertile Crescent and the history of early farming, learned the definition of a Preposition, worked on numbers with Mac’s Abacus,  learned about accidentals in music theory, and went to a coding class, a writing class, and morning Kindergarten!
